Built in 1903 by Escher, Wyss at Zurich, Switzerland
Triple expansion engines inherited from an earlier Plinio - of
1892
Length : 51 metres
Taken out of service in 1963 and then
used as a breakwater at Como
Sold for use in Colico in 1973 and again used
as a breakwater
Used as a sailing club clubhouse, restaurant and dancing club but not need as
breakwater after harbour rebuilding in 1998
Moved to Lago di Mezzola in 1999 for continued use as a
restaurant moored alongside the Hotel La Barcaccia.
The vessel retains her traditional half-saloon
appearance
2008 : Local nature reserve authorities demanded the removal of
the half-derelict and unused Plinio - a support association was set up to try
and find a way to save her
May 2009 : It has been reported that Plinio will
be moved to Donga on lake Como to a temporary home whilst a long-term solution
is worked on.
December 9th 2010 : With severe winds blowing along lake Como,
Plinio sank at her moorings at Verceia
