FOUR SIDE-WHEELERS FROM THE AMAZON built in Hebburn, County Durham, in 1884
Yards
on the River Tyne were not noted for their production of paddle
steamers with the exception of a considerable output of tugs from the
yards of JT Eltringham and JP Rennoldson, both of South Shields.
Perhaps
surprisingly, the yard of Andrew Leslie & Co of Hebburn received an
order for four passenger paddle steamers for delivery to the Cie. de
Navegacao de Para e Amazonas for production in 1884 and river service
in Brazil.

at North Shields which was named Albert Edward Dock in honour of the
prince. Guests were allowed on the temporarily constructed upper deck
for the occasion.
