Lake Mjosa, Norway
Kong Oscar
Kong
Oscar was built in 1857 just on the heels of Skibladner for the railway
company which competed with the local steamboat company which owned
Skibladner. After forty years it came under local ownership, was
painted white and played second fiddle to the larger Skibladner. Kong
Oscar was withdrawn from service in 1915 but went on to have a
remarkable a new life
on the lake. She was refitted as a luxury floating (and operating)
hotel, moving around the lake on cruises lasting a week in some cases.
An early example of such a cruise vessel. Her life ended with
demolition in 1830
