Braunschweig's once extensive tram system had shrunk to the bare bones by 1960 with 7.5 km of track remaining. Even this probably owed its existence to an agreement made before World War II that a new relocated main railway station somewhat distant from the city centre would be served by trams. Eventually started on after the end of the war, the station became the southern terminus of the truncated system. The sixties began to see growth once more. Braunschweig was too small a city to contemplate underground tramways but expansion as far as possible on segregated alignments was the plan and this policy continues today. Thoughts of developing a tram-train network with trains entering the city from the north along the existing tramway led to the laying of a third rail to accommodate standard gauge vehicles on lines built with the city's unusual 1100 mm gauge. In 2010 the expensive concept was abandoned and the three-stop tram ride from Hauptbahnhof to the city centre deemed acceptable. The third rail remains in-situ in many places. 
Above : Braunschweig's city centre is dominated by the Schloss, the highly impressive palace of the Dukes of Brunswick (Braunschweig), or so it would seem from first glance. The building was the ducal residence from 1841, replacing an earlier palace lost to fire, until 1918. The repurposed building was badly damaged by air raids during World War II. Despite thoughts of rebuilding the palace, the ruins were finally removed in 1960 and the open land developed into a park. In 2004 it was decided by the city council to rebuild the facade of the palace as a faithful replica but use the space behind as a large modern shopping centre, the Schloss-Arkaden. The new centre was opened in 2007 and provides the backdrop to this photo of tram 1461 seen approaching Rathaus tram stop having left the "Schloss" stop shortly before.  The tram was purchased from the Polish railway carriage and bus manufacturer Solaris. Braunschweig has taken delivery of 25 trams in two batches between 2014 and 2020, numbered the 14xx and 19xx series. The photo at Rathaus also shows the third rail laid at standard gauge for the planned but ultimately cancelled tram-train service.
