The
town of Gliwice lies at the western end of the Upper Silesian coalfield
agglomeration. It was linked to the Upper Silesian tramway by a link to
Zabrze. This was closed in 2009 in a highly controversial move by the
city authorities who decided not to take part in the modernisation of
the regional network which would have required a lot of investment. Due
to the fact that an essential tram depot was located close to the
eastern edge of the town's administrative area, one tram stop serving
the depot remains
