InTramCities with Gordon Stewart
All tram routes meet at
Bertoldsbrunnen in the historic centre of this south Germany city,
which retains much of its old charm despite severe bomb damage in
World War II. Trams still pass through two of the city's old gates -
Martinstor and Schwabentor on the routes to Gunterstal and
Littenweiler respectively. Route 4 to the countrified suburban
village of Gunterstal is shown in detail, as is route 1 to
Littenweiler (as far as Alter Messplatz).
Bounded by wooded hillside to the east, Freiburg has expanded
predominantly to the west, and to serve these growing areas, the
tramway was extended to cross the main-line railway tracks at
Bismarckallee (see photo below), reaching Paduaallee in 1983 and
Landwasser two years later. The route from Stadttheater to Paduaallee
is covered in detail, including the junctions at Technisches Rathaus
(where a new link to Friedrich-Ebert-Platz opened in 1986 allowed the
closure of the tram tracks in front of the Hauptbahnhof on the busy
Bismarckallee) and Runzmattenweg, where routes 5 and 6 branch to
serve two parts of the developing Weingarten area.
New "Combino" trams from Siemens, numbered from 270 upwards, are now
in operation on line 1, augmenting the already modern fleet of Duewag
vehicles.
