The Manchester Metrolink arose after various plans to link the city's two remaining main line railway terminals (Piccadilly and Victoria) failed to be pursued primarily on cost grounds. In 1992, the Metrolink system was inaugurated with the heavy rail lines to Bury in the north and Altrincham in the south-west joined by a street tramway through the city centre. This was not what became to be known as tram-train because both lines were removed from the national rail network for the purpose.  Opened in three stages in 1992, Metrolink required the use of high-floor trams because of the platform height of the stations although an innovative "profiled platform" allowed direct step-free access from a small area of the platform where a full platform was unable to be built. This tram stop was later eliminated.  This series includes photos taken along the Altrincham line, re-opened as Metrolink in June 1992, shortly after the opening of the Bury line, and further coverage of Manchester's evolving city centre at Deansgate-Castlefield,  St Peter's Square, Exchange Square, Victoria Station and Shudehill. 
Above : Sale station shows clearly how a former main-line railway station required Manchester's plan to convert such local lines and run services directly into the city centre to have high-floor trams.
