Although still a small tramway after closures reduced this small-sized city's network to a single line in 1964, the opening of major extension in 2009 and a second line in December 2018 has secured its future. Ambitious plans for a five-line network postulated in the 1990s had to be reined back when the first proposed line was rejected by the population of Ulm and neighbouring Neu-Ulm (located in the adjacent federal state of Bavaria). However, the new Line 2 in Ulm does serve the University and Science City as originally proposed. There remains an ambition for a route to cross the Danube into Neu-Ulm with Ludwigsfeld as the proposed terminus but as yet there are no concrete proposals.
Above : Ulm's Line 2, opened in December 2018, has as its longer arm the link to the newly developing "Science City" built among the woodlands of the Obere Eselsberg to the north of the city and involving a steep climb from the city centre beginning with an impressive curved tram and cycle/pedestrian bridge spanning the mainline railway tracks. Just beyond the stop at Universitat-Sud tram stop (shown in the photo) is the Botanischet Garten, the highest city tram stop in Germany.
