West Midlands Metro (Birmingham to Wolverhampton), United Kingdom : 2000
The metro opened on 30th May 1999 linking the city of Birmingham with nearby Wolverhampton running from Snow Hill railway station and alongside an existing railway as far as the Hawthorns station in West Bromwich. The metro then uses the former heavy rail alignment to Wolverhampton via Wednesbury and Bilston, closed to passengers in 1972. Parts had remained open until 1992 for limited freight operations. A short stretch of street tramway was built in Wolverhampton to reach St George's, close to the largely pedestrianised city centre.  A fleet of 16 T-69 trams were purchased from Italian manufacturer Ansaldo-Breda, who were part of the original consortium engaged to design, build, operate and maintain the metro.
